8 TheHorse.com THE HORSE August 2015 Keep in touch! @TheHorse facebook.com/TheHorse TheHorseMag A few days later, back at our offices, a visiting New York-based writer mentioned finding inordinate numbers of ticks on her children. It's been years since I've thought much about ticks, beyond editing articles on the diseases they carry— piroplasomosis, ehrlichiosis, and the other -osis I've already men- tioned, Lyme (borreliosis). Growing up on an oak-canopied hillside in Central Virginia, it was a given that I'd examine my horse and myself for ticks daily during the warmer season. Sometimes I'd find dozens. These days, my run-ins with ticks are fewer and far between. So far this year, I've only heard about ticks—I haven't spotted any yet on myself or my horse. Do we truly have a bumper crop in some parts of the U.S., and is there more Lyme? Or am I simply paying more atten- tion to the buzz because I've read this month's cover story on how warmer temperatures are shifting disease patterns in horses? Time will tell whether there's a surge in ticks and their accompa- nying diseases. Drop us a note if you've seen more tick-borne disease in your neck of the woods this year. It's always interesting to hear what our readers are dealing with. In the meantime, ask your Exten- sion agent about ticks in your coun- ty that can transmit these diseases, and check your horses from nostrils to tail, ears to coronary bands. Also brush up on your tick-borne disease knowledge at TheHorse.com/35949. Accolades at AHP At the seminar I mentioned, The Horse/TheHorse.com captured several awards for work published in 2014. American Horse Publi- cations recognized our Readers Favorites newsletter (first place Equine- Related Publishing Media eNewsletter); our visual guide to navicular disease (first place info- graphic); Managing Editor Alex- andra Beckstett's sport horse blog, "The Winning Edge" (second place Equine-Related Publishing Media blog), and our January anatomy cover featuring an illustration by Dr. Robin Peterson (honorable mention cover page in our circula- tion category). Please join me in congratulating The Horse team, and visit TheHorse.com/35975 to see the winning entries. h Ticktock VIEWPOINT STEPHANIE L. CHURCH Editor-in-Chief @TH_StephLChurch O n two separate occasions at a recent horse industry publishing seminar, horse owners asked me tick-related questions. One of the women, who foxhunts in Maryland, asked if I'd seen any Lyme disease this year in Central Kentucky, where The Horse is based. She said her veterinarian had seen "a ton of cases" and could identify clinical signs of the tick-borne disease with just a glance (particular behavior changes and neurologic signs, among others). The other woman lives much farther west and asked if I'd seen as many ticks as she had early in the season (mid-June). She wondered aloud what the equine disease repercussions might be.
