TheHorse.com THE HORSE December 2017 12 HUNGRY FOR INFORMATION First, let me state that I whole-heartedly enjoy learn- ing what your magazine has to teach about horse health, care, etc. Second, please let me say that I have found the "Farm Call" section in the October issue of The Horse interesting and informative, but it did not go any further than scientifi- cally disproving the hopes/be- liefs of the diatomaceous earth feeders. I wonder why your writer (Dr. Martin Nielsen) did not go any deeper into the issue. Such as the theory that once fed to horses, diatoma- ceous earth is an excellent source of calcium (perhaps too much?) and that diatoma- ceous earth in the manure is a deterrent to fly reproduction. Third, for those of us not living in a hub of riding and competitions, we really need to hear of the newer thoughts on sports medicine in equines, which was why I was disap- pointed not to see a word on PEMF (pulsed electromag- netic field therapy) work that is showing up in equine re- habilitation … in ("The Road to Recovery") printed in your October 2017 issue. This is all information that we in the horse world are hungry to discover and use to the advantage of our own knowledge and equine care. Suzana Oei via e-mail Editor's note: Nutritionist Dr. Clair Thunes confirmed diatomaceous earth is 19% calcium, but its bioavailability in horses is unknown. And for more on PEMF, see TheHorse.com/38308. NEWSLETTER FANS FROM SOUTH AFRICA We are a second-generation South African animal feed manufacturer and country shop in South Africa. Cathy Khoury-Prinsloo Midrand, South Africa LIVE EVENT: EQUINE LEGAL QUESTIONS I really enjoyed this dis- cussion. (Listen to the full recording of "Your Equine Legal Questions Answered" at TheHorse.com/39729.) I am an insurance agent in Maryland, and over the years I have been asked to speak about equine-related insur- ance topics to horse clubs and stables. It's surprising how little a lot of the equine people know or understand about the legal issues or liability issues involving horses. Some of the questions I have fielded are really scary. So, I was so happy with the number of people attending your program and the quality of questions.
