8 TheHorse.com THE HORSE March 2018 I wish I could take you with us to the convention because it's a truly re- markable environment. Beyond the excitement of the learning opportu- nities, it's a bit like a family reunion. Equine practitioners of all ages and backgrounds reunite with their vet- erinary school classmates; greet their former professors, attendees, and colleagues; and congratulate each other on their accomplishments. It's possible that your horse's veterinar- ian attends, too. My team and I meet with our editorial advisory board (see photo at right). At the 2017 edition, held Nov. 17- 21 in San Antonio, Texas, I was lucky enough to sit at a table during the President's Luncheon with friends old and new, some who knew each other and some who didn't. Beyond pleasantries and "catching up," a dynamic conversation proceeded on wound treatment success—the kind of stuff I absolutely love learning about. Vets from different regions and a variety of practice types dis- cussed their experiences using ma- nuka honey to treat wounds. And for the more involved cases, a longtime practitioner asked a newer one about his experience with medical maggots (conversations on maggots and dead tissue are par for the course over a lunch with vets!). What I noticed from this interac- tion and from many others at AAEP is mutual respect. Awareness of long lists of degrees and credentials falls away, pomp and circumstance about accolades are set aside, and vets sim- ply share how best to care for what attracted them to the profession in the first place: the horse. We've highlighted some of the best of the 2017 AAEP Convention here, this time in a unique flip-format special section. I expect you'll return to this information over the com- ing months as you seek to learn something new, or as specific health situations arise among your horses or friends' horses. I hope you enjoy this year's cover- age and that it gives you a sense of the inspiring atmosphere that is the AAEP Convention. h Convention Inspiration VIEWPOINT STEPHANIE L. CHURCH Editor-in-Chief @TH_StephLChurch I 've been to most of the American Association of Equine Practi- tioners (AAEP) Conventions over the past 18 years; it's an annual pilgrimage for my team and me. Many of my conversations with practitioners there center around current hot topics in equine veteri- nary medicine and, of course, around you, our readers, and how best we can communicate these concepts to you.
