Green-Lipped Mussel The New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a large shellfish that thrives in that country. Mode of Action Green-lipped mussel ex- tract is another PUFA that's naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids. Although its exact mode of action is not known, researchers believe the extract has anti-inflammatory properties. Research Oral supplementation of ma- rine-based DHA and EPA has been shown to reduce joint inflammation and improve lameness grade, hind-limb flexion respons- es, and ease of movement. In a 2012 study by Cayzar et al., horses diagnosed with fetlock lameness that received a unique green-lipped mussel extract orally for 56 days had significantly reduced lame- ness severity, improved joint flexion test responses, and reduced joint pain. Avocado Soy Unsaponifiables These are a combination of unsaponi- fiable oil extracted from avocados and soybeans. Mode of Action Avocado soy unsa- ponifiables (ASU) prevent cartilage degradation and help repair cartilage by stimulating collagen synthesis. Research Researchers at CSU induced osteoarthritis in 16 horses' knee joints. Half received the ASU orally in molasses, and half received molasses alone as a placebo. The ASU did not alter signs of pain or lameness but did reduce articu- lar cartilage erosion and increase GAG synthesis (Kawcak et al., 2007). Combinations of Ingredients A few studies evaluating a combination of joint support ingredients also exist. In a recently published Animal Health Trust study, out of England, researchers found that an oral supplement containing GC, MSM, DHA, and EPA reduced lameness grade, increased ease of movement, and allowed for greater hock flexion in horses being ridden, doing groundwork, or exer- cising at pasture (Murray et al., 2016). In the aforementioned OSU study, when researchers cultured synovial cells with a combination of HA and GC and subjected them to lipopolysaccharide, they observed significant suppression of inflammatory markers versus when they cultured with HA alone (Kilborne et al., 2017).
